I'm debating about a home server but my ISP is such crap I wonder if it's cheaper to just run a digital ocean droplet than paying for a better connection.

I think this image should be reversed... In the end, it all ends on the same machine(s). 😅

DevOps is one of the worst things to happen to tech in the last fifteen years. Yes, Dev and Ops should work closely together, and I believe that is the spirit of the idea, but they should not be one team. Much like Communism, DevOps looks fantastic on paper, but when left to actual humans, atrocities always result.

With IPv6 and symmetric fiber this is quite possible. If only more ISPs had modern infrastructure, like Fiber7 in Switzerland for example.

Agree! Refuse to use public cloud service since I realized there's no security in public cloud. Homesever is enough.

What about an old pc in a rack-mounted case that lives on a rack in your closet?

...asking for a friend.

my old PC is on the desk not under it (because otherwise the power cable doesn't reach)

No problem to get cheap 10G fiber at home (well, Zürich) but try to convince your university IT to find some slot on the right patch panel…

(admittedly they found it in the end)
